The first time 12 canoes have arrived at Fort Langley since the brigade traveled down the Fraser in 1984 to celebrate the Parks Canada centenary. This trip was even more special as this used to be a regular event for the First nations when they traveled and traded before roads were developed in BC - 19th century and before.

Come and paddle for fun, or get in shape for Dragon Boating!

Voyageur Photo Album

What is the difference between a Voyageur and a Dragon Boat?  A Dragon Boat is a long, narrow, 48 foot long boat  that holds 24 people, as well as a drummer and steersperson. It originated in China as far back as 400 B.C., and is a racing boat, not suitable for tight turns or long voyages.  A Voyageur canoe  (Shown above) holds ten people, is almost the same shape as a regular canoe, and is 25 feet long. Also called a Longboat, or North Canoe, the Voyageur canoe is identical to the canoes used by Voyageurs working in the fur trade in the 1800's for the Hudson's Bay Company and the Northwest Company. The Voyaguer is a very maneuverable, stable vessel, designed to run rapids and carry thousands of pounds of cargo. The Fort Langley Canoe Club owns four Voyageur canoes, and club members compete annually in local regattas as well as the UBC Day of the Longboat event every fall at Jericho Beach in Vancouver.

What does it cost to Voyageur? Our regular club membership plus CRBC fee entitles you to paddle in the Voyageurs as often as you wish. You can also sign up for a Parks and Rec program for eight weeks.
