Introduction to Racing
Races are normally 500 m and normally 3 heats per regatta
· Each team has 20 paddlers, a steersperson, a drummer, plus a few spares.
· Teams are mixed, womens or mens (regattas vary in definition)
· Each team should select: manager, captain, treasurer, secretary, fundraising committee and FLCC representative
· Teams must have a minimum number of paddlers and a qualified steersperson in the boat to use the club dragon boat for a practice
· FLCC has paddles and pfds for new paddlers but members are expected to get their own
FLCC fees –
· All DB team members must be FLCC club members (Apr 1– Mar 31) and may enjoy the other benefits of being a club member (social, recreational, reenactments)
· Boat usage paid by team to FLCC based on number of practices per week - Practice schedule determined at beginning of DB season (April – September)
· $600 for the season to book 1 practice per week
· $1200 for the season to book 2 practices per week
· $1800 for the season to book 3 practices per week
Team Fees
· Coaching, shirts, regattas (entry fees, transportation & accommodations), etc paid by members directly or raised through fundraising
· Each team has it’s own treasurer to handle the team funds.
Coaches
· Each team is responsible to find their own coach suited to their needs
· Coach fees normally are $50 to $100 per session based on their experience and knowledge
· FLCC will help team to find coaches to meet their needs
Regattas
· Team selects regattas to enter. They vary in size and price (entry fees of $300 to well over $1000 per team)
· Team should decide at the beginning of the season which regattas their team will attend so team members can schedule to be there.
· Team members pay travel costs and accommodations for out-of-town events and may do fundraising to pay for regatta expenses
Programs
· For those that do not want to commit to a season of Dragonboating at this time, FLCC may offer short introduction to Dragonboating programs.
Fort Langley Canoe Club (FLCC) Dragon boat Team suggested positions (these positions may be combined)
· Team Chair – for team meetings. Meetings are normally only required at beginning of season. Through the season, short meetings may be required about upcoming events, carpooling, fundraising, etc.
· Team Secretary – to record minutes at all team meetings. FLCC must be informed of Team activities (e.g. regattas attending and fundraising events). Minutes must go to the FLCC representative.
· Team Treasurer – responsible for the collection and management of team funds. FLCC membership and insurance fees are paid directly by each member to FLCC by April 1st, 2005, accompanied by the proper FLCC membership/waiver, CRBC and health forms. Boat usage fees are to be collected by the team treasurer and paid to FLCC as a single payment for each. The boat usage fee is due April 1. FLCC will pay for all regattas and the team treasurer will refund the club in a lump payment from team funds. Team funds may come from individual team members directly or from fundraising. The team treasurer will ensure that all team funds are properly accounted for, keep records of all transactions, liase with members involved in any aspect of team expenditures, liase with manager and regatta representatives to ensure payment for festivals is on time, and attend team meetings as required. Each team treasurer is required to submit monthly financial statement of revenue and expenses to FLCC. FLCC is not responsible for mismanagement of team funds.
· Team Fundraising Coordinator – Plan events that will generate money or equipment for the team, find Local sponsors willing to donate, communicate with all team members for ideas, and attend meetings as required. All funds must be properly accounted for; records kept for all transactions, and submitted to the team treasurer. All fundraising events are to be discussed with the FLCC representative prior to commencement to avoid conflicting fundraising with other FLCC teams or events.
· Team FLCC representative – FLCC is to be informed of team activities such as which regattas the team enters. Team secretary is to submit minutes of all team meetings to the FLCC representative to go to the FLCC exec.
· Team manager – This position may be held by a non-paddler. The manager monitors team conduct at all times, as covered under tournament rules; ensures that all team members have all relative information that they require, distribute passes, tickets, etc.; process and submit all required forms, waivers, fees, etc.; liaison with the registrar and race or festival officials; organize race and muster times at festivals and attend team meetings as required. Note – many regattas require a dry land manager.
· Team Captain and co-captain - The captain is a paddler in the team boat, and is responsible for the team’s conduct on water or dockside. At regattas, they are to liaison and communicate with race officials while team is on the water or dockside. At practices or regattas, they are to alter or curtail the event and the routing of the boat should the weather or conditions exceed the crew’s capabilities or put their safety in jeopardy, and take charge in an accident or mishap. They are to report to club or regatta officials concerned of any damage or missing items on the boat or dock. After practices they are to ensure club equipment (pfds, paddles and tiller) are properly stored, and the dock and yard gates and/or the boathouse are locked at all times.
· Team Cox / Steersperson: Keep boat under control and safe; standing at all times on the boat. They are to keep a lookout for other boat traffic and floating debris, shallow water or other marine hazards, as well as know the marine rules of the road and out of bounds and safe areas to practice and local hazards. They must know the boat commands and ensure the crew knows them also, practice emergency stops and start line skills; and establish effective communications with the drummer. The Cox is responsible to ensure the boat is back to the dock on time and properly moored/locked after practice. At regattas, the cox must comply with the race officials and referee, ensure the boat is in the correct lane, understand the race regulations especially those regarding on-water situations including start, finish and emergencies.
· Team Drummer/caller: Directing the actions of the paddlers in co-ordination with the Cox to control the boat, keep a proper rearward facing lookout, and be competent at calling commands to control the boat and crew. At regattas: ensure the boat is marked correctly (boat number in place), and ensure no other means are used to communicate with the boat except approved drum and stick.
· Team Regatta Representative: Liase with the team manager, team captain, team members and Race officials for the event assigned
· Team Warm Up & Cool down Person: Take charge at practices and regattas to ensure the team is warmed up and ready to paddle and cooled down after paddling
· Team Practice Attendance contact – Record team member’s attendance at practices and fundraisers. To ensure sufficient paddlers will be at practice to use the club dragon boat (16 paddlers required plus a cox) and if there are not sufficient paddlers, make alternate arrangements (take out voyageur canoes or cancel practice), contacting all team members. Have information available for captain, coach or FLCC as required.
· Team First Aid Co-ordinator – responsible for members needs if required at practices or regattas. Ensure stocked first aids kit is on the boat for practices (club supplied). Ensure health forms for all team members are available at all times.
1. Select Team positions. The following is a list of suggested positions (team format is determined by team – FLCC required DB Team positions and responsibilities list is available).
On a recreational team, most of these positions are not difficult and your team may decide you do not need all these positions though it is a good idea good to divide these duties among several individuals.
· Chair, Secretary, Team Treasurer, Team Manager, Team Captain, Fund raising coordinator, FLCC DB representative, drummer, cox, warm-up/cool-down leader, practice attendance contact, first aid coordinator
2. Select a Team name – may combine several suggestions
3. Equipment (Teams shirts, pfds & paddles)
· Team shirts - – colored T-shirt or quick-dry shirts with team name/logo and FLCC
· Pfds (same color for regattas – club has limited supply blue pfds –)
· Paddles – use club paddles for initial practices - do a group purchase
Dragonboats, pfds and paddles are supplied are regattas - club paddles and pfds for new members and dropins only. Club equipmemt is not to go to regattas
4. Determine Individual and team goals and strategies. eg fun, racing, exercise.

5. Establish Expectations of team members – consensus
· Attendance (minimum paddlers and experienced steersperson required to use club dragonboat)
· Punctuality (set time slots for all teams)
· Commitment
· Attitude
6. Regattas – discuss and select which regattas the team will attend. This does not need to be decided right away. Most have entry deadlines a month or so prior to race day, though some do fill up and they do offer early bird entry fee discounts. It is also best to select regattas so team members can plan to attend as they are usually on the weekends (bring your calendars).
7. Coach · Decide on number of coached sessions and length of season
· Select Coach and determine coach fees per session - Tryout of coaches
8. Team fees and fundraising (club funds, regattas, coach, travel, shirts, etc)
· Estimate of funds required and source of funds - collect money from team members or fundraising
9. Spares/alternate team members – discuss options, advantages and disdvantages
10. Pre-season and additional in-season training
