Guidelines for Admission
The Fort Langley Canoe Club, Power for All (FLCC, PFA) is committed to its mission of providing quality paddling programs to people of all abilities. Within this framework, there are certain physical and legal guidelines that the FLCC, PFA must follow to ensure the best experience for its clients and to remain within the “standards of the industry”
The following guidelines are presented as an aid in determining the appropriateness of a perspective client attending a FLCC, PFA paddling program.
Note: A “ personal care provider” is defined as a person who accompanies a participant on a FLCC, PFA program and assists that client with all daily living skills that the participant cannot provide for himself or herself and is outside of the responsibility of the FLCC, PFA staff. The participant, at their cost, supplies personal care providers.
The FLCC, PFA does not administer medication to its clients. We will assist with storage, prompting and counting of routine medication only. Routine oral medication is defined as any oral medication that the client has been on long enough for stabilization of the dosage and any side effects that are experienced. We will not alter any oral medication. ( E.G.: break a pill in half, crush.) This means that any prospective client, who requires extensive help with their medications, must bring a personal care provider who will control the clients medication, or participate in a FLCC, PFA program under the auspices of a referral agency, where more medical care is provided.
Any prospective client interested in a FLCC, PFA program must consider that these programs are designed as adventure based education. There will be challenges presented by the simple fact that the format is adventure based. Adventure is understood to contain elements of unpredictability and require effort. It does not translate into ease and comfort at every turn. These courses wil be challenging both physically and mentally while remaining true to the FLCC, PFA’s stated agenda of; safety first and challenge by choice.
Any participant on a FLCC, PFA program course must be able to perform the following tasks or be accompanied by a personal care provider, to be supplied by the participant.
1. Dress without assistance.
2. Eat without assistance.
3. Performs all aspects or personal hygiene.
A. Lavatory use.
B. Body eminence and washing.
C. Brush teeth, etc.
Note: Where applicable, a secondary FLCC, PFA staff member/members may be chosen to accompany and assist the participant. This is under special circumstances and should be organized with FLCC, PFA management before program commences.
FLCC, PFA Programs are designed with people of all abilities in mind. We build in consideration for aspects such as mobility challenges and fatigue. Programs have varying levels of challenge and commitment.
Any client interested in a FLCC, PFA program that is water based must be able to:
1. Wear a personal flotation device (PFD).
Federal and provincial laws, as well as common sense, require that PFD’s be worn on all of our trips.
Any participant on a FLCC, PFA program must be able to perform the following tasks or be accompanied by a personal care provider to be supplied by the participant.
1. Sit up from a supine position on the ground.
2. Move from a sitting position on the ground to a chair if one is needed.
3. Unassisted transfers.
Note: Where applicable, a secondary staff member/members may be chosen to accompany and assist the participant. This is under special circumstances and should be organized with FLCC, PFA management before program commences.
The FLCC, PFA requires that all clients be voluntary participants in our programs. All clients must be willing and able to follow directions. Clients who require supervision must provide and be accompanied by a personal care provider, who is supplied at their cost. Guardians for individuals who exhibit self destructive or abusive behaviors should carefully consider the appropriateness of a FLCC, PFA program and the safety of FLCC, PFA staff and other clients.
IMPORTANT: FLCC, PFA* RESERVES THE RIGHT TO REFUSE ANY PERSON THAT THEY FEEL DO NOT MEET THE ADMISSION GUIDELINES FOR ITS PROGRAMS.
